Please think of this as something that leaked from the corner of my mouth due to the withdrawal symptoms of my Need-to-Talk-About-Settings Syndrome.
After I finished writing out the setting, I realized, 'Wait, this is information I absolutely can't reveal yet,' and tearfully reduced it to moth-eaten text……
「Magic」 in the World of Shangri-La Frontier
All living creatures and monsters take the 「mana」 present in the atmosphere into their bodies through breathing or analogous acts, then wield magic by converting the mana they have taken in into a specific phenomenon and releasing it outside the body, or by allowing it to permeate themselves. In other words, magic is a system resembling a kind of respiratory process, and its output is heavily influenced by the individual’s health and innate nature. It may be thought of as something akin to lung capacity or alcohol tolerance. In most cases, ordinary humans are not born with magical aptitude at a practically usable level, and magic is a kind of talent.
As a rule, the nature, output, and attribute of magic differ from one individual to another. These traits are generally inherited from parent to child and ancestor to descendant, but a parent’s magical aptitude does not necessarily match their child’s. Consequently, it is not especially rare for a child skilled in the wind attribute to be born to a father skilled in fire-attribute magic and a mother skilled in water-attribute magic.
Magic is broadly categorized into 「Attribute Magic」, 「Enhancement Magic」, 「Interference Magic」, and 「Other」.
Attribute Magic converts mana taken into the body into a particular attribute, and close to half of humanity possesses an aptitude for this form of magic. As it is fundamentally an imitation of natural phenomena, it generally deals in elemental attributes such as fire, water, wind, and earth, but in rare cases an individual may possess an aptitude for light, darkness, or even a conceptual attribute.
Enhancement Magic allows mana to permeate the caster’s own body, improving physical capabilities and the five senses, and has the second-highest number of aptitude holders after Attribute Magic. Most of the 「Racial Magic」 discussed below also tends to fall under Enhancement Magic. It is often confused with what are commonly called 「Skills」, but although the results may be similar, the principles behind them are entirely different. Put simply, magic uses the brain, while Skills use the body.
Interference Magic is, when viewed as a broad category, a form of Enhancement Magic, but unlike Enhancement Magic, which interferes with oneself, it primarily interferes with others. Because its nature requires the caster to make their own mana permeate another person’s body, few can wield it at a combat-viable level even if they possess the aptitude. Interference Magic requires either the dexterity to attune one’s own mana to the wavelength of another person’s body, the strength of mana needed to overwrite the wavelength of another person’s body, or both.
And a great many forms of magic exist that fall under none of these categories. They may combine the characteristics of the forms of magic described above, or act upon concepts that deviate from the laws of physics, and much like the relationship between Enhancement Magic and Skills, even when the results they produce resemble one another, their inner workings are usually entirely different.
Frail races that generally do not cast magic may nevertheless be born with magic unique to their species, known as 「Racial Magic」; for example, the 「Call of the Mighty」 possessed by Vorpal Bunnies, Cait Siths, and the like is, in the case of Vorpal Bunnies, an innate racial trait.

Author's Afterword
Because I’m the kind of person who loves theorizing and partakes of Bloodborne (the Bubōn camp is acceptable too), HEYBOT!, Kemono Friends, and the like, and because I have a chronic condition where, unless I periodically put settings into words, new settings and such pile up too much and my thoughts become contaminated by Getter Rays, this is a breather (while thinking up new settings).
