Chapter 893: December 20th: The Ring of Intertwined Branches
Author's Preface
Anyway, here's an update. I'd like to squeeze in at least one more update.
◆
You really pulled one on me, Garunose. A surprise attack off a revive with absolutely zero indication of using an item or magic...? Ghost weapons are one thing, but a no-motion revive genuinely sent a chill down my spine. I mean, what the hell was that? Isn't resurrection supposed to be the domain of items or magic? There are two... no, three possible answers.
One: He was actually using a revive item behind his shield. Or perhaps his equipment has a revive effect... no, that's highly unlikely.
Two: A revive magic spell that can actually be used without chanting or even speaking the spell's name. But I'm pretty sure you fundamentally have to say at least the name for magic... I'm not an expert, so I don't know for sure.
And three............ I really hope this isn't the case, but it's the most likely possibility......... the possibility that it was caused by a skill.
Honestly, it makes me want to scream "Is that kind of bullshit even allowed?", but knowing the skill categories where that kind of bullshit is permitted, I can't definitively rule it out. A skill that lets a single human's jab bowl over a massive monster the size of a large truck is also leaning pretty heavily toward bullshit, after all.
In that case, the real question is, "Did I force him to use it up?" Common sense dictates that a revive is a one-time thing......... but the faint black mist enveloping Garunose's body is concerning. I can't tell if that's a debuff or an indication that a "skill is currently active." No, I can't discard the possibility that it's a completely different skill... Riot, who I fought earlier, was also wrapping his body in a similar black smoke. Or maybe it's just an essential PvP skill that I happen to be ignorant about.
That being said. Pleading for something you don't have won't make it magically sprout from nothing. The same goes for knowledge.
I have no choice but to analyze him using what little knowledge I have............. but that's probably the same on his end.
I, too, have packed my bags full of new weapons, armor, skills, accessories... and first-time killer gimmicks to show off today. This Imperial Gold Sword is one of them. It's true that I've shown off all of its abilities......... but I haven't revealed its extensibility yet. And I actually do have a trump card regarding this thing, but......... that's irreversible, so I'd prefer not to use it if I can help it.
I had faintly suspected it, but while at first glance Garunose appears to be a wall tank... having a character build meant to endure attacks with sheer defense, he's fundamentally a different type from the SF-Zoo tanks or Josette.
He's not a tank, he's a heavy warrior. The fundamental application is different; he doesn't let anyone stand behind him... that shield isn't for protecting allies. That's a bad way to put it, but in short, he's simply a vanguard with absurdly tough defenses. You could call it a build designed for solo combat.
"So that's the root of the misunderstanding..."
He was an attacker right from the start. Just as I sought speed for that role, he simply invested in defense instead.
Now then, knowing that, how should I handle this? My HP is a flame before the wind... what about him? I'd cry if that revive restored him to full health.
While manipulating my equipment menu, I call out to Garunose.
"A self-revive, huh... Never thought I'd be the one getting surprised."
"I really don't want to hear that from the guy who escaped with an ultra-high-speed back-bridge... but if you're surprised, that's great. It was originally meant for assassination, but......... I'll be able to accept later on that using it here was the right call."
An absurdly durable assassin with extra lives who can resurrect on the spot is something I don't even want to think about. In that sense, was it lucky I forced him to use it here? No, the recast for a skill activated mid-combat is reset the moment the battle ends. Whether I let it slide here or not probably doesn't make much difference.
.........I should probably stall for a bit more time. It takes time for me to heal.
"Seriously, surprise, peach tree... or whatever the saying was."
"Japanese pepper tree?"
"Yeah, that's the one. To think you'd have a chantless revive........."
"Hmph…"
Okay, that snort just now inexplicably pissed me off, so it's probably not magic. It's either an item or a skill. The Rebirth Tear Jewel wouldn't have activated in time, so it's a skill, isn't it? Somehow, I'm convinced now, you bastard.
A skill, a skill, a skill......... The fact that there are ways to bypass recast times means I’ll have to watch out for that. Having him come back two or three times would be a serious pain. In that case, there are two methods I can take.
Methodically keep hitting him until his resources run dry. Or─────beat him down completely before he can revive.
"Well, I don't really care if you revive......... however,"
My HP is recovering, currently up to about 30%. Not bad!
I chuckle at the sensation of the "ring" fitted on my left middle finger and its effect.
It's true that I don't possess a vast amount of knowledge regarding PvP in this game. But I do know a lot about "strong things" in this game. Both in terms of items, and people.
And so, my stats and character build have reached ‘completion’ through leveling up—and, thanks to information from a certain someone, the item I’d been looking for is now in my hands as well.
───Hmm. Continuous regeneration—preferably something with a separate healing check for every tick……… is that right? Nothing comes to mind from my ‘personal’ knowledge, but……… yes, there is someone in the clan who enjoys analyzing accessories. I’ll ask them about it. By the way, concerning the proof of concept for that thing you’re attempting…… how would you feel about 【Library】 lending you some personnel?
───Nah, I don't know much about healing checks for regen effects......... but if you're talking about continuous healing accessories, it's either the type you fill with potions to heal or one that just has a built-in healing effect, those are your two choices. Anyway, Sunraku, are you actually progressing the Avenger quest properly? Since others are gonna follow in your footsteps, hand over the info, will ya?
Combining the information from the Nekama who seems to hoard the most knowledge about this game out of anyone I know, and the Nekama who seems to be the most accustomed to this game's PvP out of anyone I know, the accessory I created after careful examination and experimentation, which looks like a ring made of thin dried tree branches cleverly bent into a circle, is the... "Circle of Harvest and Temperance".
It functions as a simple inventory, slowly consuming the potions stored inside to apply a regen effect... an unimpressive little accessory that made Survival and the Professor ask, "The hell do you need that for at this point? / Do you really need that at this point?"............
But I can definitively declare this: to me, this accessory is the ultimate enhancement part, worth more than a million legendary swords.
Author's Afterword
・Circle of Harvest and Temperance
It possesses an ability similar to a small inventory and can store up to five recovery potions. The effect automatically activates when HP drops, healing 1% per second by treating the effect value of the stored recovery potion as 100%.
It's no wonder Survival and the Professor gave him dubious looks when Sunraku chose this, as this accessory is such an early-game item that you can gather all the required materials just inside the Prismatic Forest Grotto.
